Hermionetookaseatinoneofthearmchairs,staringatMalfoywithwide,blazingeyes.Harrycouldn’tgaugetheemotion.Wasitanger?Itlookedlikesomethingclosertoexpectancy.Hermionesatbackandsettledintothechair,“Andyet,youallowedthepretensetocontinue.Why?”

Malfoytensed.

“Hangon—”Harrysteppedforward.“Youdidn’tthinkitwasoddthatIwasindisguiseworkingasahotelporter?”

“Ifyouhadn’tnoticed,Potter,thereisn’tasinglethingaboutthiscasethatisn’tanoddbutcoordinatedobfuscation.”

Harrytookthatasadeflection.Malfoy’sstarelingeredonhim,andHarrynarrowedhiseyes.Itwastrue,theeventsofthelastdayhadbeentrulybizarre.Eventhoughbehindhimstoodadetailedcaseboard,andMalfoyhimselfhadadmittedthatZivantushadhiredhim,HarryheldontothebeliefthatMalfoywasstillhidingsomething.

“OurfirstpriorityshouldbefindingBertrice,”ParkinsoninterruptedHarry’sthoughts.ShewaslookingatHermionebutpointedtoMalfoyandHarry.“Thesetwoidiotsfoundherthismorningandleftherbehindwithsomehoarderwithanewspaperfetish.”

JustasHarrywasabouttocorrectherthatMalfoywastheonewholeftBertricebehind,theredkneazlerevealeditspresenceandjumpedintoParkinson’slap.Startled,sheturnedtoMalfoy,mouthagapeasthekneazlenuzzledagainstPansy’sneck.

MalfoyworeatriumphantsmilethatflooredHarry.Hetookastepbackatthesightofit,unsureifhe’deverseentheSlytherinflashagenuineoneinhispresence.Malfoyreachedacrossthecouchandgentlypettheanimal.“Iwouldn’tbesosureweleftherbehind,Pans.”

“What?”Parkinsonsquawked.Shefroze.

Harryrolledhiseyes.“Youcan’tbeserious?”Malfoyshothimanunconcernedlook.Harryadded,“IsawBertriceandthekneazleinthesameroom,thisthing—Guinevere—isnother.”Hewavedhisarmsemphatically.

“You’reassumingImeantshewasanAnimagusorashifterofsomesort,”Malfoysaid.“I,too,sawBertrice’spersoninthathouse,andsheexhibitedsomestrangebehavior.”

“Well,”Harrystarted,butthenherealizedMalfoywasright.“Itwasonlystrangeinthatshedidn’tseeminimmediatedanger,andshedidn’thaveanyintentionofleavingwithus.”

Malfoysmirkedthen.“Youdidn’tfinditoddthatsheslinkedacrossthegroundonallfoursorthatthewomanofthehousereferredtoBertriceas‘Guinevere’?”

Harrywantedtohaveacomebackbutbeforehecouldthinkofanything,Parkinsonhadleaneddownandgrabbedthekneazle’sfaceandwhispered,“AreyouBertie?”

Thekneazlelickedhernoseandthennoddeditsheadupanddown.

“Thisisinsane,”HarryturnedtoastunnedRon.“Thatthingattackedme!”TheyendedupstandingbyeachotherasParkinson,Malfoy,andHermionestartedrunningallsortsofspellsandcharmsonthekneaz—Bertrice,apparently.BothHermioneandMalfoytriedtheirhandatLegilimensbutwithlittleavail.Whilethethreeofthembeganbrainstormingideas,HarryandRonturnedbacktothecaseboardandtunedtheothersout.
