Harry

Percy’sgotaproject.

HetellsittothemoveradrinkattheHog’sHead,standinginfrontoftheroomwithhiseyesshining,glisteningoverwithtears.Glisteningwiththeghostsofhispasts,Ritahadwroteonce,andnowlookingatPercyhehadanideaofwhatthatwassupposedtolooklike.

“Thiswasahorrible,horriblething.Thewar.”Percyswallowedhard,andHarrydranktherestofhisbeerjusttogivehimselfsomethingtodo.Besidehim,Draco’shandfoundhiswayontoHarry’slegunderneaththetable,forcingittostaystillandthenletgo.“Butitwashistoryinthemaking.Andsomeonehastotellit,tomakesurethepeoplewhocomeafterusknowhowitstarted,sotheycanseethenextVoldemortforwhatheis—justaman.”

ThesentencewasalmostamirrorimageofthethingthatHarryhadbeentryingtoconvincehimselfofsincethefinalbattle.HowintheendTomRiddlewasonlyTom,andwhenhediedhedidnotgooutinablazeofgloryorforacause,heonlyfellhardandfinalonthecoldground,likeapuppetwhosestringshadbeencut.Likehereallywasonlyaman.

“Therewerealotofpeoplewhodidgoodthingsduringthattime.Andtherewerepeoplewhodidbadthings.Whenhefirstrosetopowerandseemedtohavebeendefeated,wetriedtoshoveallthememoriesundertherug,andnoneofusknewanythingaboutit.Butthistimewe’renotmakingmistakes.Therewereheroesinthiswar,someoftheminthisveryroom.”Heraiseshisglassinasemblanceofatoast,andthepeoplearoundHarrywerenodding.Georgepoundedhisglassdownonthewoodentable,andtherewasaansweringcheerastheylookedaroundateachother.Everyoneinthisroomhadfought,everyonewasforcedtogrieve.“Weshouldknowtheirnames.”

Harryknewthatallofthemhadgottenalittleobsessedwithsomethingafterthewar.ForPercy,itwasrecollection,ofhearingallthestoriesandgettingthemdownasfastashecould,therightway,withthebiases.Hedidn’twantanyonewhodiedforthecausetobegivenovertooblivion,theirnameserasedandwithnoonetorememberthem.Andhedidn’twantanyonetoforgetthesinsofthosewhofoughtonthewrongside.

“Idon’twantanothergroupofkidstogrowuplikewedid.”Themoment,withPercystandinginfrontofthem,remindsHarryfiercelyofthetimewhenHermionestoodinfrontofthemallandtriedtostartDumbledore’sArmy.Itmakesalumpriseinhisthroatandheswallowsitdown.“Wedon’tneedanotherfightlikethis.Soplease,helpme?”

Thereissilence,wherePercylooksunsureforthefirsttimeduringthiswholespeech.Andthen,justasHarryknewhewouldbe,hemakeshimselfbethefirstonetostand.

Hischairscrapesonthestone,makingeveryonewince,buthewormshiswaythroughthejumbleoflegsandchairsandtablestothefrontoftheroom.Percysmilesandclapshimontheback,likehehaddonesomethingspecial.Harrysmilesback.“WheredoIsign?”

Intheend,hisnameisfirstonthelist.

Draco’sissecond.

Itstartsimmediately.

Percyhasscheduledrawnupforthem,andtheyalltakeslots.Harry,Ron,andHermionewouldhavetodoaninterviewtogether.“Wecanjusthaveyoumeetattheburrow.”Helooksexcited,butalsopaleanddrawn.“It’llbealongnight.”

Harrydoesn’twanttotalkaboutit.Ifhetalksaboutit,hemighthavetotalkabouthowitstarted,withhisparents.He’lltakeaboutbasiliskfanginhisarmandtheburnofphoenixtears,aboutamanwholivedasaratforthirteenyearsandwaskilledbyamoltenhandbecausehemadethemistakeofmercy,aboutDobby,aboutSiriusdisappearingintoaveil,aboutwhathappenedinthatforest.Hedoesn’twanttothinkaboutit,sohepushestheprospectoftheinterviewawayandletsitformaknotinhisstomach,andwhenDracoaskshimifhe’salrighthealwayssaysyes,nomatterhowtenseanddefensiveitmaysound.

HegoestomeetRonatamugglepub.Theyalwaysmeetatmuggleplacesnow,bothsotheyarenotrecognizedandbecauseRonhasdevelopedatasteforeverythingfried.Itworks,tobeabletositandpretendtobenormal.

“Istillcan’tbelievewe’redoingthis,”Harrysays,talkingaboutthenextday,howtheywillleteveryonepryintotowhattheynevertalkedabout.
